THE TRADER MAIL
square one in New York
by Andrew Crozier, square one (winning team 2009)
As Continental Flight 95 lumbered into the air, eager to break free from the hold of the perpetual Irish summer rain, the reality of the situation was finally beginning to sink in. Scattered around the cabin were the members of square one, the winning team of the 2008/9 ifs Student Investor Challenge, accompanied by teacher Mr. McGouran and Roderick and Vivienne McKee, representing ifs. The national final at the end of April had seemed like a lifetime ago. All of the intrinsic euphoria and disbelief had been quickly dissipated with thoughts of impending AS-levels. Yet there we were, New York-bound and practically airborne with excitement (no doubt the plane helped).
Standing in the shade of the terminal at Newark's Liberty Airport, we waited longingly for any form of transport that would save us from the heat of a New Jersey summer afternoon. In reference to a stretched white limousine, a comment was made, "Wouldn't it be amazing if that was our car?". Minutes later, we were enjoying the luxurious interior of said limousine with the Manhattan skyline drawing ever closer. The tone for the week had been well and truly set.
Getting one's bearings in Manhattan is a far from easy task. Admittedly, it is little more than a grid of intersecting avenues and streets, but the sheer scale makes the task of travelling in this metropolis seem daunting at first. Little effort was spared in giving us an idea of the local geography. Whilst the view from the Empire State Building was a good start, the real learning began with various excursions on open-top buses, subway cars and finally a quick flight around the island in a helicopter empty but for us. Certainly, knowledge of the city streets proved invaluable during our stay, with countless miles being covered as we traversed Manhattan on what seemed like a half-hourly basis.
Given that the Student Investor Challenge is an economics-based event, much of our time was spent experiencing the business world of New York. Tours of the Federal Bank Gold Reserve, the New York Stock Exchange (ordinarily closed to the public) and the headquarters of market giant Bloomberg were embarked upon with great enthusiasm. Success in business often depends on one's contacts, and having been given a personal tour of City Hall and meeting the mayor and billionaire Michael R. Bloomberg, I would venture a guess that we have an edge on most other seventeen year-olds. Yet as much as we enjoyed the insight into the financial scene and the chance to present our winning talk on the state of the economy to the British Consulate, more pressing issues came to prominence – we were (albeit VIP) tourists after all.
The floors of Macy's and the sidewalks of Fifth Avenue were pounded with considerable regularity as we were let loose in one of the shopping capitals of the world. After a while, popping into Tiffany and Co. or Bloomingdales seemed rather normal, as we adjusted to a pleasant change in lifestyle. A hard day's shopping was followed by a relaxing meal at one of the city's finest restaurants. Locations such as Balthazar's, Sardi's and The View, revolving on the 48th floor of the Marriott overlooking Times Square, provided culinary creations fitting for such a stay in New York.
Having given the U.S economy a much-needed boost, we headed once again to an airport, this time with the intention of keeping all of our suitcases within the weight allowance and all our new possessions in the suitcases. All of the anticipation of the enjoyment we would have in New York had been surpassed. Knowledge had been gained, money spent and a determination acquired, that someday we would be the ones working in the skyscrapers, living the New York lifestyle every day.
